I was wondering if anyone else has Barlow Winches made in Australia on their C25? I did some research on them and the Barlow line of winches was manufactured as a cheaper alternative to the higher priced winches of the day. I am sure Catalina went that route to keep the cost of the C25 in line with their target market. Barlow is no longer in business. Mine are single speed non-tailing. I have three. Two coaming mounted and one mast mounted (at least it was until I relocated it to the cabin top for a single-handed configuration).

My first thought here is that they've lasted 30+ years and, I assume are still serving you well. I've often thought that those products with the best advertising and the highest price get called the "best" when they're probably no better that the second shelf variety. That's certainly true with the third or fourth tequila shot.
The jib sheet winches on my '84 C-25 are two-speed Lewmar's. The original jib sheet winches on our '75 C-22 were single speed Barlow 15's (currently in my garage) which I changed out a few years ago for composite Harken's. Nothing wrong with the Barlows, just wanted newer, presumably faster and definitely lighter, Harkens.
The tooling for the old Barlow's was purchsed by Arco in Australia who sells them currently under the Arco name. I had Barlow's on my Corinthian and was impressed at how rugged they were so bought from Arco the "new" versions for an Electra I owned. They were heavy but excellent quality -- and at the time very inexpensive. Practical Sailor rated winches a few years ago and as I recall they faired poorly as they were heavy -- as comparrison Anderson came in top of that match-up with Lewmar in the top tier.
My bet is someone needed to replace winches and found either a used Barlow or Arco/Barlow.
I have never heard of any winch being one to avoid -- I think pesonal preference and condition/maintenance has more to do with usability.
I guess I should have clarified my intent better. I was just curious if others have the Barlow's on their earlier year C25's. Mine work flawlessly and my interest was not based on a feeling I had been slighted in quality. I was just relaying the knowledge I had garnered by Googling. Mine are Barlow 15's as well. I clean and oil them every couple of years and their simplicity of design (ex: minimal number of components) does not appear to diminish their effectiveness.
What was interesting when I replaced the Barlows on our C-22 is that Catalina did not use 1/4" bolts. They were smaller, like 3/16. And of course the hole pattern was different for the Harkens! I anchored the Harkens with 1/4" bolts.
It very well could be that Catalina gave you the choice of winches and how many when the boat was new or ordered. That would explain why some of us have self tailers and some don't. Some have cabin top (1 or 2) winches and some don't. Some have lewmar 6 some have lewmar 7 some have lewmar 6ST etc. Maybe Barlow was also offered at the low end. Just a guess.

If you're interested in a couple of Lewmar 2 speeds, I have two sitting in my office. Will make you a good deal. They have been well maintained. Replaced them with self tailers.
