Washed the main yesterday and have it hanging from the rafters in the family room to dry. I think it adds a nice maritime ambiance and that we should leave it there for the off-season. Pat is not convinced.
We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.

I lay the sail out on a large tarp on the deck. Thoroughly wet it down and then use a soft brush to wash it on both sides. I use two gallons of hot water with 1 cup liquid Woolite (or Simple Green) and one cup bleach. After washing I hang it above the deck and rinse thoroughly. It dries in the sun for a while and then I bring it inside for the final drying. Total time is less than an hour. I use a small scrub brush for spot cleaning.
I agree with the others - it's a great addition to the room. It creates a focal point that clearly was missing before the sail was hung. But what will you do in the spring?
I have a set of uncovered wood airplane wings hanging from the ceiling. I took the plane apart to recover and the wife likes the wings up there and will not let me take them down. You would not believe the comments we get and some times the funny looks from folks that will not say anything.
