Anyone else have one of these furling systems on their boat? Our "new to us" boat has this system, but we won't be able to take the boat out until spring. My past sailing involved mostly racing, so furling is new enough to me that I thought the CDI4 on our last boat was the best thing since sliced bread (even without the bearings!). The boat we just purchased has an older roller-stay system that uses hank-on sails. I am wondering what we are in for?

I've heard of but not seen these... Is this one where the hanks are left detached from the forestay, and a cable is sewn into the luff? If so, extreme halyard tension is all that keeps the luff from sagging. I've heard you can't reef the sail with the Mariner setup--also true of some of the early Schaefer systems that most people have replaced. I'm suspicious that, having once had a contemporary furler/reefer, you're going to want to upgrade. (If you go CDI, get the bearings--sorta like sliced bread with butter.)
