I own a 1986 Catalina 25 that has a bent stanchion at the cabin entrance. The bend is at the base only, not along the 1 inch tube. Catalina Direct sells new stanchions; however, their stanchions have a slightly different 4 hole pattern (+/- 1/8" off center) which Catalina went to in 1990. To use new stanchions you have to fill the holes and drill new ones. Unfortunately this means cutting the a lip underneath the stanchion inside the cabin and making a flat surface to accept the new stanchion base - a great deal of work. I tried bending the stanchion back without success.
Has anyone made the new stanchion replacement, found where you could buy an older pre 1990 stanchion, or recommend how to straighten the stanchion base?
I found a machine shop that had a press and they were able to flatten the base. I might add they had a whole collection of jigs (something the average homeower wouldn't have) that allowed them to apply pressure in just the right spots . . .
I replaced one of my stanchions with a new CD stanchion. I had to make two of the holes oblong for it to work. However, after replacing my cleats with larger cleats earlier this year, filling the old holes with epoxy and then drilling new holes was fairly simple. I used West System Six10 to fill the old holes, it was very easy.
Do you remember which two holes had to be made oblong? Was it the those in back of the lip or in front? By how much were the holes off? Did you have to cut the lip? If I don't have to mess with cutting the lip, buying new stanchions from CD makes sense.

It has been awhile since I replaced that stanchion. I don't remember having to cut the lip. If I remember correctly, it seems that the new stanchion base was slightly wider front to back (bow to stern). I'll take a look inside the boat later tonight.
I went down to the boat and tried to get a measurement on the bolt holes. The best I could find is that the two outer holes (close to the rub rail) are about 3/16" wider than the old stanchions. It does not appear that I had to do any modification inside the boat. The only visible difference in the two is that the new stanchion has a much beefier u-shaped loop welded to the upright.
Great, I would like to buy one of your stanchions.
I sent you an email several days ago and it went out as "sent"; however I now see that it never went into my sent box. Subsequent attempts today give the same negative results. Not sure where the problem is, but I will sort it out this week end.
Okee Dokee.. I've got to get another one looked at regarding the shipping cost. I just emailed you. I'm a nut about hating spam. You better get your address off this list or you will be loading up ..
OK now my interest is picked. I thought the stanchions sold by CD were replacements for all years. Was their a difference on earlier boats and if so what was it and after/before what years? I was about to purchase replacements from CD for mine in preparation of a winter project.
The stanchion I ordered from CD was not even close to what is on our boat (1987). The base was a different shape, with different bolt pattern, the stanchion had a different cant, and was a different length. That said, it's possible the stanchions on our boat were changed at some point and that the CD product was stock. I don't know. I ended up returning it and just getting a local welder to repair the damaged stanchion. It ended up costing less than the CD stanchion and came back looking better than new (perfect finish, extreme shine, etc)
I just bought the replacement stanchion from CD. Too many people using at as a grab rail I suspect. $57 becomes $74 with tax and shipping. Lowell says I may just need to adjust the holes a bit. Anybody done this, and any advice? i.e. sealants and/or any other prep or details I should know?
Fit, fill, and drill. Catalina used several different stanchion bases over the years. It is no more difficult to fill and redrill a hole properly than to make it oblong and prone to leaks and less stable.
