OK, I'm not usually an especially ecclesiastical kind of guy, but I heard a passage this weekend that made me think that the writer of Psalms musta huddled in the cockpit at some point. Any other passages that make you think whoever wrote them musta been on a boat?

Psalm 29:2-4

2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters.

4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.

Here's one:

Mark 6:51
Immediately HE spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." Then HE climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed,

I did a search for bible passages & sailing. Here's a link to a site about bible passages related to sailing and how to make it interesting for kids:

Thanks for the link... kids will enjoy it!!

The English language uses many metaphors...... here are a few

1) Hebrews 6:19
19We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast, which reaches inside behind the curtain,20

2) 2 Chronicles 8:18
18Huram sent him ships and some of his sailors, men who were well acquainted with the sea. They sailed with Solomon's men to Ophir,20 and took from there 450 talents21 of gold, which they brought back to King Solomon.

3) Isaiah 33:23
23Though at this time your ropes are slack,61 the mast is not secured,62 and the sail63 is not unfurled, at that time you will divide up a great quantity of loot;64 even the lame will drag off plunder.65

4) Ezekiel 27:7
7Fine linen from Egypt, woven with patterns, was used for your sail to serve as your banner; blue and purple from the coastlands of Elishah10 was used for your deck's awning.

5) Luke 8:23
23and as they sailed he fell asleep. Now a violent windstorm73 came down on the lake,74 and the boat75 started filling up with water, and they were in danger.

6) Paul's Journey to Jerusalem
1After1 we2 tore ourselves away3 from them, we put out to sea,4 and sailing a straight course,5 we came to Cos,6 on the next day to Rhodes,7 and from there to Patara.8

7) Acts 27:17
17After the crew64 had hoisted it aboard,65 they used supports66 to undergird the ship. Fearing they would run aground67 on the Syrtis,68 they lowered the sea anchor,69 thus letting themselves be driven along.

8) Acts 27:4-8
4From there we put out to sea16 and sailed under the lee17 of Cyprus because the winds were against us.  5After we had sailed across the open sea18 off Cilicia and Pamphylia,19 we put in20 at Myra21 in Lycia.22  6There the centurion23 found24 a ship from Alexandria25 sailing for Italy, and he put us aboard it.  7We sailed slowly26 for many days and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus.27 Because the wind prevented us from going any farther,28 we sailed under the lee29 of Crete off Salmone.30  8With difficulty we sailed along the coast31 of Crete32 and came to a place called Fair Havens that was near the town of Lasea.33

Revelation of John 18:17
17because in a single hour such great wealth has been destroyed!"49 And every ship's captain,50 and all who sail along the coast51 - seamen, and all who52 make their living from the sea, stood a long way off

I've mentioned this book on the Forum before, but it has been a year or two. I recommend to you - Sailing Acts, following an Ancient Voyage - by Linford Stutzman. He is a professor at Eastern Mennonite University who organized a sabbatical journey to retrace some of the apostle Paul's travels told in the Book of Acts in the Bible. He and his wife purchased a Westerly 33 (nice boat BTW), restored it somewhat, and sailed it throughout the Mediterranean.
It tells a lot about Paul and what he probably had to endure, but it also gives a good look at what one might expect sailing into foreign ports in the area, especially Greece. In the back of the book, it gives stats on the voyage, such as # of days sailing & motoring, # of ports, anchorages, distances traveled, etc.

Here's a link to the book on Amazon:

Look at Mk 6:45-50. Jesus sends the disciples ahead in the boat and follows later, walking on the water. V 48 says "He saw they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them, and about the 4th watch of the night he came to them walking on the sea. <u>He meant to pass them by.</u>"

I too have been sailing when walking would be faster!! (but not on water)
