I would like to know if anyone has any experience sailing in the Edenton/Chowan River/Albemarle Sound area of North Carolina and how they like it there. Also, if anyone has sailed there and also in the Neuse River/Pamlico Sound area as well as the above how they compare the two. Thanks.
I live in Holiday Island which is next to the Perquimans River about 10 miles east of Edenton. I sail on the Albemarle Sound and it is a pleasant area to sail. There is very little traffic. There is a Yacht club at Edenton and another at Albemarle Plantation. The deepest in the sound is about 29 feet, It can get nasty in a hurry especially in the hot (90) months months. Let me know if you need any more about the sound.
Use Search above, type in "Neuse" and select the General Forum--you'll find posts from several owners (and an alumnus) on the Neuse and Pamlico Sound.
We are located on Bay River between Neuse River and the Pamlico. The only time we've been to Albermarle is when our sailing club does the Weeklong trip (usually in mid June). If the club goes North then we often stop in places like Edenton, Englehard, and Manteo. We usually make round the point and come down Alligator River. It won't be long before my wife and I make longer trips by ourselves. Right now time is not a luxury.
Can't speak for Albermarle but we love the area of Pamlico and Neuse. There's lot's of places to pull into and play or just sit. Ocracoke is almost due East from us and about a 6-7 hour(or less) sail with the right wind.
Oriental is one of the popular stops around here. They have more boats than people living there.
It's probably too far south for you but our club is the Neuse Sailing Association (NSA).
As always thanks to all who responded. I actually have my boat moored in Oriental and am quite happy there, but it is a little pricey. I noticed that there seemed to be some marinas in Edenton which were substanilly cheaper, hence the question. BTW there was a fire at a marina in Washington NC last week and 25 boats were destroyed. Bad news.
