Good grief, we're about to order a new Ullman main and genoa from the Deltaville loft, and even with a 20% boatshow discount - we see that CD has slightly lower prices. Ugh
Anyone else done homework on this?
Deltaville is quoting "cruising" sails verses CD's "offshore" sails.
Different lofts are different enterprises. I always buy directly from Ullman Ventura, why give CD a cut? And order something special, maybe a block at the forward reef cringle, something to make sure you get a fresh sail., Remember, if you have CDI furling you need web loops in lieu of cringles at the head and tack of the head sail.
I've been buying directly from Ullman of Ventura (Gary Swenson - ullmanventura@attglobal.net) for several years. My new, in late 2009, main sail is fantastic. Gary also does re-cuts on old sails that are still serviceable. Bill Holcomb - C25 Snickerdoodle #4839
I too have bought (main and head sails) from Gary at Ullman Ventura and only have good things to say. He was very competitive and really knows Catalina's. More importantly we discussed my sailing style and he recommended slight alterations, etc., so the sail was semi-custom.
there are a lot of guys with more experience than I out there, but I bought a new main from CD and had them install a dutchman on it, and it was only it the high 800's, and I am really happy with both. What a difference a new main makes, and the dutchman works great for me too. I know there are a lot of guys who think its a waste of time, but I like it, and the ease of dousing, but it is personal preference with that! Good luck!
I ordered a new main as the second project on my '82, (the first was to get rid of the insane rope to wire halyards). I was advised by several people here that the Catalina 25 is headsail driven and if you need both sails the head sail is the most important. That was the first of many times I received better advise on this forum than my own logic was providing me. Spend your money wisely.
Going with Gary Swenson appears to be a no-brainer. His quote was better than what I received at the Annapolis boat show. He also beats CD. Even found a 2007 posting from here when I Googled him.
He steered me towards all full battens but I think I'll settle on full for the top two partial on the bottom two. All full batten sails remind me of training wheels on a bicycle.
He also recommended a 135 as opposed to a 150. He explained when you furl (reef) the foresail - the more fabric you have wrapped around the foil - the worse the sail shape.
That is why I bought a 135. I also sail in high enough average winds that I also had it cut a bit flatter, therefore it rolled more nicely too. Gary Is a great guy.
