Hey guys. Looks like I'm going to be burning up the bandwidth here until our project boat is finished next year. Anyway, most of the rubrail and aluminum bracket on this boat is in pretty dang good condition. However, there is one stinking spot (about 8 inches) that obviously took a good hit at some point and is damaged pretty bad. The hull is fine there so we were hoping to simply splice a new piece of aluminum and rubber in the damaged area. Unfortunately you can only buy the rubrail in one piece to cover the whole boat and the aluminum is sold in 6' lengths. Total cost new is over $200. It's not worth that much for this cosmetic repair so I was hoping to find a resource for some salvaged parts. If any of you have a good resource and can point me in the right direction, I would be most appreciative.
You might check the Swap Meet section to the left, where most folks buy and sell. Craig's list can be fruitful at times. Click on <Search> at the top of the page to check the forum for the term "part out".
Thanks for the offer Dave and I may take you up on that. Unfortunately the aluminum is definitely ruined in that spot as well so I'll have to do something with that too. However, buying a small length of your leftover rubrail and one 6' aluminum piece from Catalina Direct would still be considerably cheaper than buying a whole new rubrail kit. I guess in this case the rail did it's job and more by protecting the boat and sacrificing itself. :-)
As for the year we are pretty sure it's an 81'. I say pretty sure b/c we are certain it's NOT a 79 (which is what the broker had it listed as) but has a cockpit configuration of the like found in an 81'ish boat. Also, we have not checked our serial number with Catalina yet but will definitely get around to that very soon.
I had a guy round up, lose control and come back and hit me in a race once. I had to splice the rubrail. The damage was near the port quarter. I found that the splicing kept coming apart leaving a small gap. If I remember correctly, the two ends where the splice met finally had to be screwed down to keep them from moving apart. Because I had removed a section of 6 inches or so of the rail, that left me short that amount at the stern. I patched in a piece of wood the same size as the rub rail in that spot. I don't even notice it anymore. Inexpensive fix for cosmetics.
