Guys: While sailing this past Wednesday evening my winches felt sluggish; can they be taken apart by the average guy cleaned re-greased and put back together? I bought the boat last May and given it’s a 2004 some periodic maintenance seems in order. Looking at the winches I see no easy way to take them apart.
Actually, they're pretty easy to open up. You'll notice a retaining ring at the top of the winch. Slip that off and the outer case slides up. Routine maintenance is something readily done by the boat owner. The problem comes in after you open them and find a few very small and easily lost parts. The best suggestion I've read is to make a hole in the bottom of a shoe box just large enough to sit on the deck surrounding the winch. This way, you'll catch anything that springs out. I wouldn't do it without first buying a maintenance kit that includes some of the smaller parts as well as the right kind of grease, etc.
I've serviced mine. Not hard to do. The cutout box trick is a must and be sure the box is taped down. The Lewmar web site (under Support) even has videos on maintenance and they sell a maintenance pack with instructions.
