Just in case others are having problems with their main halyard rope clutch slipping read the following:
I have had problems with the main halyard rope clutch slipping (following the initial hoist) for quite some time. I have contacted the clutch manufacturer who blames the line provided by Catalina (2005 WK) and Catalina feels the problem is most likely the clutch.
However after a sail in high winds (we really needed to tension the main!) with some very experienced sailing friends 'we' have discovered a trick. Apparently the clutch is designed with a two 'position' if you will locking locking mechanism. If you raise the clutch to release, loosen the line and close it you get the 'low' grab mode of operation AND if you open the clutch with the line under load AND re-close it you will note that it is harder to close AND it now holds quite well. I have re-read the clutch documentation and if you read closely it describes this behavior; I don't know why I missed it.
Hope this help others or maybe I am the only one who does not read well!
• Open the handle fully forward to thread the line through the clutch. • With the handle closed, the clutch will hold the rope automatically as the load is eased from the winch. (Allow for a forward rope ‘run out’ of up to 20mm (1") as the cam engages. Gripping performance on new rope will improve with use). • Manual lockdown function. If required, you can achieve increased load holding by lifting the handle until vertical, then locking it down firmly onto the tensioned rope before easing the load from the winch. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
