Hello all. After mooring my boat (C250 WB #167) in the same slip on Lake Erie for 10 years with two fenders in the same locations, the plastic color stripes near the top of the hull are hopelessly marred where they rub the fenders. When waxing the hull this spring, I also noticed that the striping is cracked in several places. Has anyone ever tried to replace or repair those? How's it done? Not a big sailing topic, admittedly, but my boat is pristine except for that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried painting to repair the damage? This is a trick used in the RV industry/car repair industry to replace damaged vinyl graphics when total replacement is too expensive or impossible to obtain. If you use the correct color it is virtually impossible to see the repair. Use electricans tape instead of masking tape to minimise bleeding under. Remove the tape just after the paint sets up.
The guy that did the bottom job on my boat sent me to a auto body supplies place that had every thickness and color stripe tape you could imagine. You use a razor blade to slice and remove the damaged section. Then you tape the new chunk in. Very simple. As I understand it's also quite common. If I remember the name I'll edit this post.
When we got our 1996 wb in 2000 the tape was a bid messed up, I ordered a new set of stripes from Catalina, at the time it cost about $60.00. I removed the old ones using a heat gun and razor blade. It might be a good Idea to trace a light pencil line on the hull using the old tape as a guide before you remove them to make accurate placemanet of the new stripes easier.
