Many on this forum have purchased 4-stroke engines in the past few years. Who has installed a water separation filter, such as Racor's and where did you mount it? This past summer was a particularly wet one here in the NE which in combination with the 10% Ethanol mixtures caused many fuel related problems - (read: a banner year for the boat engine shops).
I have a separation filter temporarily mounted in my projects box, but it has only been there for a year. I had good intentions, but I use two 3 gallon tanks so I replace fuel fairly frequently and haven't had any issues.
Our resident Curmudgeon installed one on the inside of the transom below the tiller, between the scuppers, and it fits perfectly there, as if it were always there. 1/2 way between the gas tank (in the port locker) and the engine (starboard mount), it's an ideal location.

At the advice of a mechanic, I put in a much larger one than Racor would suggest--you can get something less obtrusive.
It's rated for much more than a Honda 8 drew, but the very expert mechanic I talked to recommended it for its finer filter (the smaller units have higher-micron filters), and because the slower fuel goes through, the more the water settles out. But given that the builder put a smaller one in my new boat with a V-6 Honda 225... you can probably go smaller and be well served.
Do you ever have any issues getting fuel to draw through the filter when first starting up? It would seem to me that I would worry that the outboard fuel pump would not be strong enough to pull through the filter???

Also, when running, the engine is below the filter. My Honda 8 had no problem.
