Has anyone have a less expensive solution to replacing the portlight above the head? I don't think what I had in there was factory, as it was really poorly installed. The best solution I could find is this lewmar size 2 portlight. Anything else out there just seems cheaply made. The problem is they cost $237 and the price is fixed by the manufacturer.

Nice if you can afford an opening unit, but you might check on the boat that might be parted out. If you don't need the aluminum frame, a new seal and glass would not be a problem.

Kurt, yep, pretty pricey. I installed two of these on my 1981 C25 and the quality was excellent. I also explored the lesser priced units and just couldn't bring myself to putting them on a boat that I so much time and effort invested.
I had to open the existing openings by only a sliver to fit them. You will have to invest in shorter, metric, stainless screws as the ones that come with the unit are too long. The color of the interior trim rings (though I did have to cut down their depth) were almost a perfect match with the Catalina liner. Looked like original equipment.
Of course after installing these, the main salon portlites looked very dated so I had new tinted glass made for those!
Maybe install one this year and one next?
Good luck!

Here's what's in mine. It has a plastic frame cover, but I guess the velcro didn't hold. I'm not sure how the frames attached from the factory.

FWIW, my plastic cover snapped onto the window frame.

I installed two opening ports from Beckson that look like this.
While they are not the heaviest and strongest you can buy, neither is our boats, so I figured these would be just fine.
They come in many different sizes so I would recomend calling Defender customer service and talk to them. Customer service is great.
If you want to pursue these and want more info, email me offline at
catalina0029 at yahoo.com.
I can give you the exact part number of the one's I'm installing and the exact opening size, photos and whateve else you need.
I have the older ones without the drain.

I preferred the metal frame to the beauty ring.
