I am having difficulty locating the correct shoot-thru-hull transducer (NO HOLE in boat) for my Garmin GPSMAP 440S. I contacted Airmax and they recommend their P79 product, but no-where can I find if it is compatible with my Garmin device. It looks like it will be but nothing definitive. The P79 comes with an interesting mounting system that avoids use of the wax toilet ring, so your thoughts on that are also welcome.
I guess the fundamental question here is do all 50/200 KHz transducers use the same "communication" protocol.
Try the standard transducer with a wad of toilet ring wax under it. Clean the hull area where it'll go and don't leave air bubbles in the bees wax. Mine and others have worked fine using this method.
It looks like nearly all the transducers are manufactured by Airmar. The Airmar P79 model is re-sold by a variety of folks (Defender sell it as being manufactured by Raymarine but you can clearly see the Airmax name on the picture) and it is also re-sold by Garmin. Many thanks to the previous poster; the price for a new unit from the FactoryOutletStore.com (with free shipping) is about $50 less than Defender.
