I'm replacing the rudder on the Nauti Duck so I decided to go with new pintles and gudgeons as well. For the gudgeons I'm using a set of the Catalina Direct gudgeons with the Delrin inserts. My pintles/gudgeons have developed a little bit of play that can make noise that bugs us when we are trying to sleep. I'm hoping this alleviates that. I also picked up a couple of replacement inserts for whenever I wear out the originals. Of course at that time I may not remember where I put the spares!
Has anyone else tried these out yet?
We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.
Hah, right down to the last sentence I was going to offer to buy your old ones from you. I'd like to put an extra set on SL so I can store my mast and rudder at the same time.
I'm not sure the strength of the gussets is necessary, but the elimination of play or slop, depending on your mood, has been a major improvement. You probably want the CD longer upper pintle - I elongated the hole in my old one so it would still take a large clevice pin and that took a while
FWIW, on the C25 we just purchased the PO installed four gudgeons. The pintels slide between the gudgeons just like you'd find on the doors of your house - and yes the pins are separate.
David, I don't need to keep the old gudgeons. By "spares" I meant the spare Delrin bushings. I'd be happy to sell the old ones. It is handy to have the mast crutch mounted on a separate set of gudgeons.
Jim, my C250 is a wing keel so moving the rudder up with another set of gudgeons wouldn't help. The wing will hit the bottom before the rudder. Plus, the rudder is fastened to the wheel steering system.
Dave, I'll have to see how the pintles works out. I'm getting new ones from Catalina with the rudder. The wheel steering mechanism is attached to the rudder so the rudder is mechanically attached to the boat. I never remove it.
Sean, I am getting the newest balanced blade rudder from Catalina. Here are a few photos they sent me. This is the WB version. Mine will look the same but be 12" longer (71" vs 59").
Cost is $660. I have the unbalanced rudder and am looking forward to less force on the helm. My current rudder:
