FWIW
If you mean asymmetrical, I would not fly an Asym in front of the forestay because of the stupid long sheets. Move the forestay to the forward pin on your masthead and put the spin block on the current forestay pin. Tack/gybe the Asym inside the forestay like a big drifter and you will be able to use much shorter sheets and will be happier with the use of the sail. I have done it and find it a much better way for a short handed cruising boat. Remember the bow stem fitting has multiple holes for tacking things to it, move the forestay to one that allows the Asym tack to be tacked behind the forestay. The word tack is being used two different ways here.

Frank, I tried this with my asym this summer and got nothing but fouled up lines with everything wrapping around everything else. I suppose its possible but I personally find it a lot easier to fly the asym outside of the forward stay. Yes, the sheets are longer but that has been less of a problem then the fouling issue. But I also have to say that we gybed the asym inside of the forward stay once or twice anyways, kind of by accident.

That said, to answer Bruce, my sheets are 5/16 Sta-Set. From a strength perspective this is probably overkill but anything smaller would be hard on the hands. Folks talk about using Endura Braid which is less stretchy but having a little stretch in these sheets I don't think is a bad idea. Weight is probably more important because you don't want the weight of the line pulling down on the sail in light winds.

1/4 stayset are my light air sheets. Stayset stretches too much in big air (symmetrical with a pole). I use 8mm VPC for higher winds. This is cheaper than stayset-x, softer, and more flexible.

0.85/foot at west marine.

8mm is approx 5/16.
