I have hull #5577. My hull id number only is 11 digits long. My insurance company tells me that it's supposed to be 12. My title only shows 11 digits as well. It also ends in 87 on the hull and 86 on the title. The boat is listed as an 1987 on the title. Any ideas?
The HIN is a 12 digit number, the first three are the manufacturer (CTY) followed by the 5 digit hull number 05577 followed by a two digit date of certification or manufacture followed by a two digit year. If your title doesn't match your hull identification number you have a problem. On 84 and later boats, there is a second hull identification number in a fairly inaccessible place in case the boat is stolen and the visible HIN is changed. It may be that there is a typo on the title for the year, but 11 digits is not correct. As recommended, contact Catalina and find out where the second HIN is and hope for the best.
your HIN may have a "K" after CTY then the 4 digit "hull" number, followed by a 4 character combination of letters and numbers. The "K" denotes the 25 ft model (on a C-22 an "H" is used). The 4 character combination denotes the month and year built, or the model year if the first character is an "M".
