I recently bought a Humminbird 755c GPS which has an external antenna that's about the size of a hockey puck. I was going to mount it on the deck just in front of the mast. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
If you mount it to close to the mast it will interfere with all of the satellites between it and the mast. Your sails may also provide obstruction. The less obscured the position you put it the better. I mounted mine on the gunwale just forward of the stern light.
My initial thought is that it's going to get kicked in that spot, How about on the stern rail? The wire can be concealed inside the railing and led inside the boat through one of the rail bases.
I wouldn't mount it near the mast, you don't want the reflections from the aluminum, or the interference of the mast "shading" the antenna. Pretty much nothing else on our boats will interfere with the signal, even from inside the boat. I always bring my GPS inside with me when we're anchored so I can keep a watch on our position.
Mounting it up on a rail is a good idea or on a stanchion.

I'm pretty sure he meant the same thing I did with the antenna being in the mast's shadow. The closer you are to the mast, the larger the shadow that masks out the signal from the satellites.
For some (stupid) reason I had not thought about the stern, ut that is definitely the place. And sorry, guys, I didn't mean to stir up all these feelings!

Must be some really small satellites!<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
Just because you can't see them doesn't mean there not there. Hey, I tripped over one last week!
