OK, some of you may remember my "incident" in Charleston last year wherein the See too owner/captain refused to assist and then threatened to sue me for describing his actions here and to his corporate office.
Anyway, I have the inside scoop. I hung out with a couple of yellow captains over a few IPA's... Shhh! Tow Boat US gets paid for every run - See Too does not. There is a reciprical 100 bucks per hour thing, but their (See too) primary source of revenue is from thier home base members. SO, if I sign up listing Newport RI as my home port, most of my money goes to that See Too owner. If you are out of region, it isn't profitable for them to respond while the Tow Boat US guy doesn't care - he will get paid anyway from corporate.
Obviously, there are different owners in different regions, so not all services are the same everywhere for everyone. But the fundamental issue is compensation or the lack of it depending on where you are. If you never leave your home port, the issue is sorta moot - perhaps. But like AAA, you want to know that the Tow Truck driver is getting paid for the tow that costs you nothing.
Also heard and verified that the previous See too operator actually sunk two of HIS boats while here in wherever we are ville.
Now I feel lucky that I have a year paid up with Sea Too, too, to cover me for my foolishness on the Chesapeake Bay. But I never would have expected non-service in another area! Thanks.
Very interesting... Glad I have TBUS (unlimited) for my patrols up and down Long Island Sound, out to Block, and up to Newport and Cuttyhunk--that covers several operators' territories.
While sailing on Pensacola Bay, I heard a call to TBUS and followed them to their working channel. The poor boater needed to be towed about 3 miles to his marina and only had basic ($50) coverage, but the TBUS base was 20 minutes away. The TBUS captain explained that it was his time of departure and time of return that set the charge and it would likely be $200 above the $50 covered. He said " I'd happily tow to you to Ft. Walton for free if you had the unlimited option", and suggested that that should be the next boat purchase.
True, but that cost was near the minimum. TBUS also has a $150 package for $18 a year. My freshwater unlimited costs $34 a year and a little more with my insurance rider for 2 months in Pensacola. I think the complete fresh/saltwater package is $116. Every one does what fits themselves, but I like having it and the Admiral would be intolerable without it (ran out of gas once)
