This might sound crazy, but how do you ease the jib sheets when they are on a self tailing winch.

I searched the Lewmar site and found nothing there.

My method is just unwind the sheet from the self tailer under tension and then ease, putting the line back in the self tailer when done.

The admiral often handles the sheets when it's blowing, which means more (read 'too much') tension, and I'm wondering what others do.

Thats how it has always been done on boats I have owned and crewed on. If it is blowing above about 10 k., keep 3 turns of jib sheet on winch below the self tailing turn. Many sailors don't use the gripper on the winch but rather cleat the sheet which then makes easing it easier. Here is a link to an article on safe winch use.http://www.sailnet.com/forums/gear-maintenance-articles/20127-using-winches-safely.html

We do it the same way. We use the tailer.

I seldom used the self tailing part of my winches. I put large clam cleats on the coaming and used them when I needed to actively trim the headsail. I think self tailers are more trouble than they are worth on a sail that you can grind with one arm.
