Back on my quest for a dinghy and outboard, I was also reading up on dinghy nav lights.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

That is cute! I've heard of it being done before, just never documented as well. The simple solution to this fellows problem is to get the all around on a pole, and attach duct tape to the rear facing portion, thereby blocking the light to the operator, but still allows you to be harbor legal anywhere.

OH, and whistles. Must have a whistle attached to every PFD. That is a fineable offense some places.

Hilarious! (I'm easily amused these days!)

From the USCG Aux:

quote:
A PFD by itself is just the beginning. Members of the Coast Guard and Auxiliary are required to carry additional safety equipment on their PFD’s. This equipment, although not legally required, has and does save lives every day. Let’s take a look at some of this additional equipment, and how it works... The second item of additional equipment that we suggest you have on your PFD is a whistle... The Coast Guard requires its members to carry a whistle attached to their PFD’s with a lanyard.

Doesn't sound like an actual violation to me (unless you're a Coastie).

Well, at least the sailor didn't have to go to the ER to have the item removed.

All I can say is that the fellow gives new meaning to the bromide: "Another bright idea".

We have a whistle and a strobe light connected to every PFD. It's not enough to float, you need to be seen and heard to be rescued in some situations.

I agree it's a great idea... but it's not in the regs, and therefore I can't see how it's a "fineable offense." If a Coastie thinks it is, I think he's confusing the regulations pertaining to Coasties themselves and the actual regulations pertaining to the rest of us. Thank them for the recommendation, but ask them to show you the code.

It is a fineable offense in FLOREEDA and SC if Fish & Game guys are looking for an excuse.

From their website: "All vessels are required to carry an efficient sound producing device, such as a referee's whistle.

Vessels less than 16 feet in length are required to carry at least three visual distress signals approved for nighttime use when on coastal waters from sunset to sunrise. Vessels 16 feet or longer must carry at least three daytime and three nighttime visual distress signals (or three combination daytime/nighttime signals) at all times when on coastal waters."

"All vessels are required to carry an efficient sound producing device, such as a referee's whistle."

I understand that. But that's a bit different from...

"Must have a whistle attached to every PFD." That's a good suggestion, but not a regulation.

Point noted... We heard about the rules that way and complied before actually researching it... And, if they all have them you never have to worry about being in compliance. NOTE the referrence to 3 night time signals...

If pyrotechnic devices are being used as the night time signalling device, then yes, 3 are needed. But a working, readily accessible flashlight also satisfies the requirement for a night time signalling device.

Agreed, but Florida is rough on cruisers. I got pulled over twice and didn't realize that the three handheld rockets in my pfd pocket filled the requirement anyway, until now. Once they saw the handheld radio, boarding ladder, stern light, bow light, pfd's with whistles and flares, they ignored the newly opened Corona in my dinghies custom cup holder.
