Hello all,

I just purchased SCNewbie's C250WB "Cornbread". I plan on changing the name to "Takin' life slow" There is alot of good information here. I will post my experiences as to how I balance the boat... it seems from this forum adn conversations with him that the previous owner felt he had an undersized gen 1 rudder. He had problems with a nasty roundup that he could not tame. It is in fact a gen-2 kick up rudder which has been modified with arlyn's directions with a bit of forward rake. Also it seems I have a 100% instead of a 110% jib.

I imagine that a properly tuned rig combined with a repaired centerboard cable that I can pull up a few degrees combined with reefing appropriately should allow this boat to run like the wind. I am in Michigan so it will take a few months before I can launch her. I used to be able to balance my chrysler 22 to ride on rails with the keel winch... with a swing keel or centerboard you can dramatically change your center of lateral resistance forward and aft quite alot. I haven't yet seen this suggested. (Nor have I tried yet... I may be eating my words.

Essen,

Yes, moving the centerboard can change your balance.
There are a few posts about that in the archives.
Of course everything has is costs and moving the centerboard will cause the C250 not to point as high.
There is a trade-off, but you need to find what works best for you.

Why are the pictures so small on this forum? When someone posts to get help, I notice much of the time I can't see what they are showing and neither can others from their responses. Are they being compressed too much? Is this a setting an admin can fix?

Welcome! Check the thread on posting pictures in the Testing Forum. The size depends on the image you select on whatever site you store your pictures--a thumbnail will yield a thumbnail (as in my signature below)--a selected picture will yield an image of the size you're viewing. (Am I making any sense?)

Essen... adding my welcomes and Russ has it right that adjusting the center board aft to assist with helm balance is helpful. In fact, about '98 or so, Catalina started installing a stop block to keep the board from going full down. A Catalina drawing exist if one is wanting to add this but it is fairly simple using Marks a Lot to mark the line on the center board for a couple of favorite positions.

Even with the good grip of the 2nd generation rudder, an over canvassed 250 can round up. Does your main have a single or double reef... the first couple of year models had only a single reef point but two are needed with the second being fairly deep.

My rule of thumb is 1st reef around 12-18 and after that the second.

Congrat's Essen!

Are your planning on keeping your new boat at a marina this coming season? If so, which one?

@Arlyn Wow, good info! I have a 100% jib and my main has only 1 reef. I think I'll send it out for mod before it gets too warm. I'll look around for the drawing of the keel limit. Funny. When I first looked at a drawing of the boat, I thought the keel looked too far forward or too vertical.

@dlucier I'm sailing out of the mouth of the Detroit River at the Lake Erie Metropark.

@Dave Thank you. Makes sense. The tiny pics are operator error, then.

@John, I will eventually... I'm broke right now till I sell the other boat. :-)

I pay the $350 for the trailer dry dock for the year and put it in a slip for the few months that my kids are out of school in the summer. I'll keep an eye out for you.

Wait, were you a C25 next to the only Hunter 260 in a slip last year? If so I already met you.

Look forward to seeing you down there this year.

No, Essen, that wasn't me. That may have been Phil and/or Mike on Second Wind. I believe they were next to the H260 this past season. I was on the same dock, E, but towards the middle on the opposite side.

I'm sure I'll bump into you, hopefully on land, not on the water, more than a few times this season, and I look forward to actually seeing a C250 in person....78 days and a wake up!
