Paul, On my wheel there is a separate nut that I have to tighten to keep the wheel on the shaft. I remember pulling the wheel to put on an autopilot and had to remove the wheel nut a couple years ago. The newer pedestals have a tapered shaft with a key, if I remember correctly.
If you spin out the knurled knob on mine, it just unscrews from the brake assembly inside the pedestal (has a shaft that is part of the knurled knob). I had to spin this out to pull the wheel when installing the autopilot.
The wheel nut shown in the photo above is the same as I have. I can tighten it all I want but the wheel still spins. The wheel brake knob goes into a small hole in the side of the pedestal. To install the brake itself, it appears that you have to take off the top part of the pedestal. Thanks guys for the helpful discussion.
