We were out in about 15 knots yesterday with seas about 3 feet. We had a single reef and were rolling quite a bit. Everytime we did a roll the boat creeked. I can't remember it ever doing that. Could it be there was a strain on the hull from the rolling stressing the hull because of the outboard's weight? When we furled the jib the creeking was worse. When we doused the sail the creeking greatly deminished. The creeking seemed to come from the cockpit floor.

Any thoughts?

Steve, I have an 03' and have been out in similar winds/seas but have never noticed creaking. Maybe yours is haunted!

Oooooh... you guys mean creaking. Creeking is what we used to do as kids in an old mortar box, going down the Salt Creek west of Chicago. I was trying to picture a C-250...

If you still have the 8mm projector, run the movie and have someone film it from the wall/screen onto digital videotape. Then you can upload your sweet little innocent sailorboy's face to YouTube. Only 2 steps from 8mm film to the web. If it's sailboat-related, it's relevant to the forum, after all.

Steve, I have not had my hull creek and I suspect yours is not either. Could it be the area where the chain plates from the shrouds go through the hull and into the cabin? I would look at places where would might rub fiberglass, etc. Also could be the furler itself, near the drum or the mast at the mast plate.

Have one person sail and the other go all over the boat trying to pinpoint the exact source of the creek.

Never noticed any creaking (or creeking) until tonight. Couldn't really figure out what it was. It went away when I furled the sail so, there's a clue. I finally decided that what sounded like creaking was actually the telltales tapping against the sail. The frequency would change with shanges in the wind or tack.

First thing I would do would be to try to track down the source of the sound. Take someone out with you and have them take the helm while you follow the sound. The most likely sources would be the rig, or swing keel if you have one. Check to make sure you don't have a chainplate working loose, or something wearing badly on swing keel as these kinds of things can cause serious damage if they are not remedied. There is also the possibility the sound is coming from the mast; a shroud working back and forth in a spreader boot can creak, so can a hound, even one that is not loose and so can the mast step. My mast creaks, it has always creaked, I've never found anything loose or excessivly worn on it. I know the sounds my boat makes and if I hear something new, it worries me and I'm quick to locate the source. Usually when I hear some new sound, it turns out to be something below I didn't tie down.
