Just wanted to get back with the conclusion of my posting. I went with the tilley hat. I received it the other day - Bought it mail-order from www.Campmor.com .
Yesterday, I was out sailing after work. It was the sea trial for the new hat. I like it ! Thanks guys for all your inputs. I was actually surprised to learn about the Tilley hat and how many of you had one ! I was reading their instruction manual (They have one - You would think all there is to it is to put it on your head ! LOL), It also has the background behind the original hat and the ones that followed. The originator was searching for a suitable hat for sailing and so...he wound up devleoping this hat. After learning of it and then going to one or two outdoor (all day) events at the Wash DC Mall area, I noticed a number of people wearing those hats.
Anyway, the hat passed the sea trial. I was sort of concerned that it being a wider brim than what I was currently using (hiking hat) that it would get in the way of lines/shrouds as I was doing my thing on the boat. But that was not an issue. It is better ventilated than the hat I was using and offers a bit more shade and is also light - bought the Airflo Light hat.
I've always worn baseball cap, they have to be good quality and adjustable though or they are too much trouble. They have to be snug so they don't blow off when it's windy. When it's cold, I like a hoodie also... with a baseball cap under it. I've tried a lot of other hats over the years, but eventually they blow off my head and I go back to baseball hats. I keep several extras for those who forget to bring one. As important as a hat is sunscreen, so I keep a lot of that on-board too.
