I am sorry for the repeat Question but I can't seem to find the thread by searching. I need to re-seal a few bits of deck gear and need to know the correct way. I can't remember how to clean the space in the inner deck and then if I pour pure epoxy into the hole, or do I add some kind of filler.
If any one can remember where that thread is I would greatly appreciate it
Hi Clay... There are a couple of approaches to what you're describing, which are excellent for preventing water intrusion into the plywood core:
1. You can drill larger holes than needed for the bolts, apply tape over the bottoms of the holes, swab the plywood edges inside the holes with unthickened epoxy, and then pour in slighly thickened epoxy (using microspheres or chopped glass fibers--I prefer the fibers). Then, after the epoxy has fully cured, redrill smaller holes through it for your bolts.
2. You can avoid drilling larger holes in the fiberglass by instead bending the very tip of a nail, putting its head into your drill chuck, and using the bent tip to "excavate" some plywood core from inside each hole. Then tape, fill, and redrill as described above.
The master of these techniques is Leon Sisson--that might help you in your search for the threads.
