Yes. Well worth the try. I bought the leather set last year and they work just fine. I promised myself that next time I will go down to the local saddle shop and snag some pieces of leather for a buck a piece, just cut the pattern, punch the holes and save quite few bucks.
I deal with a sports equipment repair shop here that I think would be able to replicate the shape quite inexpensively. I recently got them to repair my cockpit cushions and she charged me $20. Last year she repaired my mainsail cover (sunbrella) and charged me $40. She has also repaired hockey gloves quite reasonably.
I haven't tried doing what you suggest, but I think its a good idea.
If anyone has bought a set and not installed them, do us all a favor and trace the outline onto a piece of grid paper for us. I think I can come up with a working pattern (I'd start with something disposable like cardboard, and then transfer to leather, but you could save me a step!
Even better - just photocopy the boot on a piece of graph paper...
