My boat is on land. I seem to be getting some water through the forward hatch. What is the optimum angle for the boat to be set so the drain in the hatch works properly. I never understood how the hatch drains but I believe the boat has to be set so the hatch drains aft.
Steve, The forward hatch drains forward into the anchor locker thru the drain channels around the hatch, they have to be clean. I believe some one once wrote a very slight tilt to the rear when the boat is on land or trailer. You can check this just by opening the hatch and pouring some water in one of the channels and see which way it flow and adjusting the tilt of the boat accordingly........
We had this problem for a while last year till I did exactly what Bear suggests above. I stood in the hatch with a cup of water to see which way it flowed. I wound the trailer jack until water flowed forward towards the anchor locker. We have a leveling gauge just inside the main hatch, and I just noted where it was so we can easily set it back there now. On our gauge, it's just a bit tilted towards the front, contrary to Bear's recollection. However, I'm not convinced that the gauge is level though, so I just use it as a relative gauge, not absolute. The true test is the water flow.
We get lots of maple seeds & evergreen needles into the gap, so you have to keep that clean or you'll get backups that'll leak into the v-berth even if it's tilted the right direction.

Yes, its a balancing act to get the forward hatch to drain forward and the aft hatch to drain aft. But it can be done.
That's correct, you only tilt the boat forward just enough or you'll end up pooling water in the main hatch which will then leak into the cabin. You want the forward hatch to just drain towards the anchor locker. Then the main hatch will still drain properly as will the cockpit.
I have never had water drip onto the V berth or onto the cabin floor. on her trailer, or in the water. When Brandy has been on the trailer I just kinda eyeball the position and adjust to where the it seems a little bit tilted aft. A tarp over the whole boat fixes all, been there done that. This year I am at the marina where I had to pay a little more attention to water and winterization issues.......
I have always used a level on the trailer to make sure that the boat is as level as possible. In all the years I have had Papas Boat II, I have had only minimal leakage into the v berth
