When returning to port one day on our San Juans cruise we noticed a sailboat motoring behind us and it was overtaking us. Then it stopped and we got to the marina first. The boat was assigned to the slip next to us and we soon found out why they had stopped.
The daughter of the captain had passed out from Carbon Monoxide poisoning! When her husband tried to help her up he too collapsed. Both were taken to the emergency room, given oxygen, and recovered.
The boat did not have good ventilation and apparently the exhaust had found its way into the cabin. It had had one of those outboards-in-the-well setups.
Anyway the lesson is - Have a CO detector in your cabin. CO is odorless and can kill you. If the husband had not noticed her and called for help it could have been a real tragedy.
We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.
Randy, That's a scary story indeed. Glad to hear that a disaster was averted.
I worried about the interior of our boat since we have both a propane stove & heater. I searched around until I found a 9 volt battery powered CO monitor at either Lowes or HD, (don't remember) for about $35 I think it was. When our next set of registration tags showed up this June, included inside was a CO sticker that's now required by WA state. They don't require a CO monitor, but I guess maybe the sticker will remind someone to be careful. For me, I like having the monitor (that's never moved off of it's zero reading yet) watching my back. I mounted it right next to the port chainplate which seemed like a good location after reading the instructions. The little green light that flahes about 1x/min to tell you it's working is a bit distracting when you're trying to get to sleep sometimes, but it's easily ignored once you figure out what it is.
