Since I may finally be getting close to buying a boat and someday I will probably get a trailer I was wondering how much of the boats weight is supposed to be on the keel and how much is supposed to be on the pads. I'm referring to the wing and fixed keel.

Thanks in advance!
Gary

Can't say about the trailer, but when my fin keel boat sits in its cradle, virtually all of the weight is on the bottom of the keel with the four supports used more or less just to keep it upright.

Thank you Don!

I've heard some people say that is the correct way and then others say it should be split 50/50 between the keel and the bottom of the boat.

A longtime owner of a Precision with a fin keel at my lake distributes his weight approx, 50% on the keel and 50% on the bottom (supported by bunks on trailer)
He doesn't know for sure the weight distribution, but he did say that he thinks its important for any keel boat to have distributed weight.

Considering the weight of our boats, I should think that you will want more than 50% on the (fixed) keel, more like 75%. You don't want to risk the trailer pads deforming the hull. with a swing keel, you'll lower the keel just enough to have it resting on the trailer, then take any slack out of the cable.

I seem to remember that it should be 80% keel. The pads are there to keep the boat from tipping over, that's it.

I once had a fin keel C22. I called Catalina and asked them the same question. They said 70% on the keel and 30% on the pads. Now how you are supposed to adjust to that is anybody's guess. I took away that most of the weight goes on the keel and the pads are for stability and a bit of weight support.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Most of the information I'd heard before posing this question was the same as several of you mentioned. The majority of the weight went on the keel and the pads are used for some support and stability.

I didn't think about calling Catalina. Duh!
