I'm about to rebed all my deck hardware. I've heard good things about butyl based caulks - that they don't harden, work well when rebedding chain plates, and last a long time.

Does anyone have a source for butyl caulking?

I got curious and found this...
--------------------------------------

BUTYL-RUBBER CAULK: This group of caulks works best on concrete, concrete block, brick, stone, gutters, flashings and chimneys. What makes butyl caulk special is its ability to be used in extremely wet areas. This makes it great for jobs underground and on the roof. Butyl caulk also works well on aluminum siding.

Although butyl caulk can be painted, it comes in many colors. Unfortunately, it is difficult to work with. It is stringy when applied, requires paint thinner at cleanup time, shrinks a lot and is slow drying.
---------------------------

I suspect your sources are Home Dopey or your choice of building suppliers... but I'm skeptical of its advantages over polysulfide for general boat use. (I might consider it for bedding deadlights.)

Run fast from this idea, I used it to seal the t-track rail to the side of our boat, It has been 2 years and I am still cleaning up small parts that seem to stick to everything. I got some on the bottom of my shoe, and it got everywhere. I had a great idea to try and clean it up under the track with a screwdriver, it was like getting gum off of your clothing, it's stringy and hard to get off of anything, so I had the bright idea of taking WD40 and a scrub brush to clean it out, this took it from a goo to a black liquid that then smeared into the gelcoat, My deck turned a nice gray color after mutiple times of cleaning it up. I would use 3m 4200 or a good Polysulfide.

Just my 2 cents
