A friend of mine is looking for a source to replace the transducer a Standard Horizon (Standard Communications Corp)Model SL-1on Knotmeter. The manufacturer stopped making knotmeters a while ago. If he can't find one does anyone know if a transducer from a different manufacturer will work with The Standard Horizon unit.

The best advise is to toss it and buy a GPS. I have never seen an instrument from that era that did not look like crap from age anyway.

I agree with Frank. GPS is far more accurate, doesn't get clogged with seaweed, and can't sink your boat if it fails. And once they epoxy up the existing through-hull, they'll have one less point of failure to worry about in their hull.

For SOG maybe, but not through the water where tides, currents, waves, winds,...etc have an influence on boatspeed.

I like having the GPS and a regular knot meter. Comparing SOW to SOG gives a good sense of the current and I find the SOW a better tool to tune my sailing techniques as the feedback from the paddlewheel (Raymarine ST40) is more responsive than the chartplotter.

I have the opposite problem. My transducer is good, but my display has been fried by the sun.

If your friend gives up on his transducer, I'd be interested in buying his display unit.

I no longer race and I sail on a still body of water, a GPS is great for me.
