I need to replace my head stay and have a hood 705 furler. I belive I have to take apart the furler tubes to get he headstay out. I should be able to drill out the pop rivets that hold it together, if that's the case. Has anyone ever had to do this and do I have to take the furler apart. Are Pop rivets the way to put it back together? do I use stainless or aluminum?
I wish I could talk to the rigger who put the new standing rigging on mine (with a Hood furler with the riveted foil). I think he used the old stay to pull a messenger line "downward" through the foil (so only the eye had to make it through), and then used the messenger to pull the new stay "uppward"--without disassembling the foil. I recall he was a little dubious, but it worked. If you need more information, I might be able to track him down (now in VT).
Thanks Dave, I thought about that but was not sure how hard it would be to get the new stay through all the bearing pieces. It's worth a shot before I go to all the trouble to reomove all the rivets.
