Has anyone considered locating the battery just behind the steps into the cabin? Pros/cons?

That's a very intriguing idea. I went right out to measure and you could fit a box with two Group 24 batteries behind the steps on a Wing Keel 250. It would move the weight forward and provide very easy access to the batteries. This winter I will be doing a major electric project (shore power, breaker panel, outlets, etc) and I am going to give you idea some serious thought.

I kinda like mine out of site. As for moving the weight forward, can't get much better than under the v-berth.
