Tom's posting regarding the Association Burgee reminded me of a comment to make/question to ask.....

My Catalina 25 came from the PO with the line attached/hoists to the spreader bar and already had a US Flag hoisted. Since the flag looked a little ratty, I bought a new one which seems to come in the a std small size of 18" X 12" (same as Assoc Burgee). I have found that if I leave the flag up all the time, the 18" length is just long enough to whack against where the shroud attaches to the mast at about the height of the spreader bar. The flag sometimes even gets stuck on the shoud fitting to the mast. If I lower the flag a bit, then the shroud line is more in the way since it angles away from the mast and more into the path of the flag.

Is there a way to minimize the deterioration of the flags from getting torn from the shroud fitting or the shrouds other than taking the flag off when not on the boat ? Is there perhaps flags that come in say a 16" length ? (I guess I could sew up the last 2" but then the flag may not be well proportioned...not that anyone would notice ?)

By the way...my doaughter likes the worn out flag look...she says it has character and therefore wants me to delay hoisting this second new one I have already bought.

It's my understanding that the national ensign should be flown from the aft of the vessel not the spreader. So, get a flagpole and attach it to the aft rail or, put it on the backstay and it won't hit the shrouds.

I would also encourage you to properly dispose of the worn national flag. While it may have "character", some might think it disrespectful to display a badly worn flag.

Larry,
If the same rules apply for ship mounted flags as they do for flags on land, then I think that the flag should not be flown at night while you are away from the boat. Check out this link from West Marine: Flag Etiquette

I believe that my burgee halyard block is mounted on the spreader further out from the mast than yours seems to be. It has no contact with the shroud. You might have to relocate your block further out.

Probably best to take off the flag when not on the boat ! This is easy enough just that the way it was attached was with one end of the line attached to the top of the flag and the other end to the bottom of the flag. Continually taking it off runs risk of losing the top end of the line into the wind or up to the spreader. I will look at making it a continuous line and put snap hooks in for the flag.

Back many years ago when I sailed on those big haze grey ships of the most powerful Navy in the world. I recall we would fly the ensign off the stern on a flag pole when in port. As we were preparing to leave port we would hear those wonderful words over the 1MC "Underway Shift Colors" at that time we would take the ensign off the stern flag pole and raise it up the mast.

Seems like it was yesterday.
