Does anyone have experience running new 4-strand (16 ga.) electrical wire down (or up) the mast or is this a job that MUST be done with the mast down?

There's always something!

Did mine with the mast down. If I had it to do over again, I would have figured out a better way to keep the wiring from making noise inside the mast. It's not bad, you can barely here it over the halyards clanging naturally anyway, but still...if I had my druthers...Good luck.

Mast down is the only way to go. It can be done with it up but its a pain.

Just finished rewiring the mast on "This Side Up" before the flood came...also installed a new halogen steaming light (from CD). Since the mast is so perfectly in column and tuned, we didn't want to drop it. I measured from deck to steaming light, and from steaming light to masthead, then built a wiring harness from 4-plex (although I only really needed 3-plex). Removed the anchor light, drilled a larger hole to accomodate the new wiring and fed it down the mast using the old wiring at deck level to pull it out. Unfortunately, all the foam in the mast jammed it tight. So, after a bull session in the clubhouse we found a solution - poured a quart of acetone down the mast, waited 2 or 3 minutes and the new wiring slipped out perfectly. When the old steaming light and teak block were removed, the two thin pieces of messenger line that I'd attached to the connecting wires for the steaming light were right by the hole!!! Miracles do sometimes happen!! Pulled out the new wires, riveted the new base to the mast and then attached the new light. Now we have two bright working lights and the mast is still perfect...
