I'm putting an offer in on a 1986 Catalina 25 today and hoping this will result in my officially joining the group here. With that said, my previous experience with sailboats was not vast and included only dinghies (Snipe, Butterfly, and Flying Scot). The Catalina's electrical, plumbing, etc. all present new challenges for me. Nothing I can't handle, but I would like a resource available. All that to say, is there a book that you folks recommend for a newbie that would help me with care of the boat?

Thanks!
-Bryan

Bryan,

Welcome! If you spent time on a Flying Scott, you should be good to go. As far as manuals and books associated with the Catlinas, you can access the C-25 owners manual from this webpage under Manuals and Brochures. You request concerning books is vast. There are many, many books on sailing, navigation, rigging, maintenance, and everyother aspect of sailing. Check your local library and look for used books via amazon. However, the specific information you seek you have already found - this webpage. I was and still continue to be a newbie and this page has been of tremendous help and remains my first stop for knowledge.

So, ask away!

Bryan,
Welcome to the forum.

I'd suggest looking at Don Casey's "Complete Illustrated Sailboat Maintenance Manual". It's a compilation of 5 or 6 of his specific titles. Get it through the Amazon link on this site and the association gets a few pennies from the purchase.

Daren's right, though, this forum will likely be your best resource.

Hi Bryan,
Welcome! As another newbee I have to agree. A lot of these guys really know their stuff and are happy to help whenever they can. I come here for advice before anywhere else. Good luck with your bid! The C-25 is a great boat!

Hey Bryan,

First welcome to the forum and if everything goes well with the purchase of your new boat, welcome to the fleet.

I'm a newbie also (disregard my post count, I spend 6 months on the hard ) in that I'm continuously learning new things.

Hi Bryan,

Welcome! As many others on this forum recommended, get your hands on a copy of Don Casey's, Sailboat Electrics Simplified. I just received my copy (ordered through this site) and I'm beginning to see the light...really, I am. I've always have been electrically challenged, but now, with the help of this book, my cabin lights now work.
Best of luck with your bid!

Casey's Electrics book is one of the segments of the "Complete" book. Essentially the publisher has combined several of his individual titles into a single volume. Cheaper that way.

Catalina Direct Owners Handbook is a catalog with a lot of good advice, a 'must have' for a C-25 owner. Check out their website.

Thanks for warm welcome everyone. The Casey book looks like a good one to have close at hand. Also, nice to know there are so many folks on the forum that can be of help as well. Definitely don't feel like we'll be alone with this purchase. We're looking forward to joining the crew soon.

Thanks!

Try to get a survey done on the boat before you purchase it if this is an option.

All of the above, plus The Anapolis Book of Seamanship--a big, illustrated overview of lots of topics for handling and maintaining keelboats. I also have Chapman's Piloting, which I leaf through every winter to remind myself of things like signals and rules. I learn something every time. Both books are more general, but worthwhile.

Chapmans
Annapolis Book of Seamanship
Calders 12 volt Bible
Any of a number of Don Casey books

There are a bunch of recommendations on our links page. Click links in the menu on the upper leftside. Scroll down almost to the bottom of that page and look at the books from Amazon. If you click those links the association gets a few pennies for every dollar you spend.
