The male part of the clip that the hatch cover snaps to on the boat has rusted off. How do you replace it? Is it simply screwed to the boat? What should the hole be filled with for the new fitting?
If so, you just drill them out, open the void and fill with fiberglass resin and filler, redrill to correct size and put the new snaps in place.
Trick: Use a dremmel to cut a slot in the tip/side of the fastener screw so that it cuts it's way into the resin instead of trying to squeze into and therefore crack the new resin.
Paul, thank you for you excellent suggestions. Would Marine Tex work as the filler? Could you give me some more info on the dremmel part. I don't understand that part.
Steve, never used marine tex, I keep a gallon can of west marine resin in the garage.
About the dremmel part. It's a simple trick, you can turn any screw into a self tapping screw if you simply cut a groove along the lower length of the screw with a dremmel rotary disk cutter.
It's particularly effective when using self tapping screws, like on the snap fittings, into fiberglass. If you predrill the hole the correct size, the self tapper cuts it's way into that hole. If you don't use a self tapper, you risk the cracking of the new resin/existing fiberglass as the screw tries to force it's way. Obviously this is not an issue if you are screwing into wood, but even then, it dramitcally reduces the chance of splitting.
Try to drill a Hole (in the stud) about have the size of the broken off stud or a little bigger and use a easy-out(home depot) to back the screw out . it will probably spin out while your drilling . if you use backward cutting drill bit it should come out while your drilling .
Try to stay on the the metal and not slip off in to the fiberglass .you could dremal a flat spot on the stud to drill on center .
If you can get the stud out you should be able to screw the new one in the same hole .
