The usual suspects, multi-tool, screwdrivers, sunglasses, rigging pieces-parts, etc.
However, I have a plan this year. At a truckload tool sale I found a very powerful magnet on a stick. I plan to tie it off to a line and drag it off the rear of my boat while moored. The stern will actually cover a circle approximately 70 feet in diameter, that may be over 12,000 square feet if Pi R squared is the formula (30 years out from that class). I figure over the course of the summer I may find some of my tools and maybe some others.
Of course our mooring divers likely pick up a lot of the easy stuff but maybe I can pay for my magnet.

Last year, when I got my new boat to Nyack, my brother and I went out to buy all the stuff that we needed pronto. He was very insistent that a 35 trillion candlepower rechargeable was of the utmost importance. We shopped for the perfect lantern in more than 1/2 a dozen places and finally purchased a rather expensive one because you've gotta have a LIGHT. Needless to say the first night, as we were going from the boat to the launch that was picking us up, I dropped it out of the bag. As it went down it glowed orange as it shorted out and we were all able to say our last goodbyes.
The first time I ever set foot on a Capri-25. WYC runs training classes at the start of each season. I'm assigned to Jalapeno. The class proceeds without incident. On the way back in, we fire up the motor, then......bang....splash.....followed by quiet.
The wooden motor mount snapped in two, and a brand spanking new 4-stroke is in the water. It was so new, the owner did not yet have a tether. However, he had invested in a fuel hose!
Yep, you guessed it. We're towing the motor behind the boat with the fuel hose which is now stretched to waaaaaay beyond its design limits!
All’s well that ends well. We got the motor back on board. Nobody cared about the cell phone dropped over during the "rescue". And, the owner still invited me to become regular crew!
Since I have only had my boat for a year I have only a small stock pile of tools under my boat. my favorite 5/16 wrench, 2 screw drivers (I didn't learn the first time) and a few shackels.
I also accidently dropped my friends BBQ over board while helping him mount it to the rail...OOpps. I thought he was holding it and he thought I was holding it.. We both broke out into laughter and wrote it off to one of those memories that will always make us laugh.
When i was making inventory of all the tools I should have onboard a very wise person told me "Just go to garage sales and swap meets for your tools..". Now I know why!!

I have lost 2 pagers, a BlackBerry, And two Craftsmen electric screwdrivers (Seems I forgot that Milk crates have holes in the bittom DOH!!).
My daughter lost a cell phone, Drivers License, Boating certificate and money.......off of the Jet Ski she put it all in a zip-lock for safe keeping and tied it to the handle bar. And couldn't figure ot where it went......oh yeah she helped me carry the milk crates. I taught her well : ).
Don't feel bad Dave I've got a "younger" son who thought it was his province to take everything on board, not fastened, and throw it over the side. I don't know if he's over the spell or just outgrown it but if you're game, I'll lend him to you
Couple weeks ago I used a type IV cushion to sit on the observation seats. I got up to take a pee over the side and knocked the cushion overboard. I took my pee, turned Piseas II around and retrieved the PFD with my floatable boat hook. Since the cushion floated, not sure if that counts. But after hearing all these very sad stories I will be sure not to make same mistakes by allowing anything that either wont float or that I dont care about. on the deck. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, is that possible? Maybe I better lower my deductible to $50 on my boat insurance policy!
A few years ago my wife dropped her school keys off the dock, $60 to replace plus her own keys. I went to Orchard and got a magnet and string. The sales clerk was confused when I told her not to put my magnet in the demagnitizer. She said she had to call her supervisor on that one. Afterward my son told her what we were doing with the magnet, her reply was,
I just dropped an oarlock in the drink this weekend. Picked up the oar to put it on the sailboat and heard this ssssssssssssss sound. Just as I figured out what it was....bloop. Doh! Hard to row the dinghy with one oar.
No Piseas, dropping a floating cushion overboard and then retrieving it does not count. Go toss something else off your boat and then you can list that.
Okay, how come sailing is so dang blame expensive?
Could it be that on a day when the checkbook remains firmly in the pocket, a day that I didn't buy a single boat toy, the cell phone on the belt bumps a stanchion and takes a swim?
Can't think of any tools I have lost (yet). Once after a couple weeks on the mooring we decided to hose down the deck and put the plug into the hole for the solar vent. Afterward my wife tried to pop it out from the inside. I saw what she was doing just in time to see it pop up and roll down the deck and over the side. The other loss was a hand held VHF. When we got into the dinghy it was there and when we got out it was gone. Anybody want the charger base and nicad battery for a Standard Horizon radio (HX350? It was water proof and had a fixed clip on the back) The charger tranformer says model CWC 230, the drop in base is model CCA250, and the battery is CNB350.
On the brighter side... a relative of ours regularly retrieves goodies off the bottom during his frequent dive trips. We are now the proud owners of 100' anchor rode. There's an eye on one end and splice on the other. I keep wondering exactly how did that one end up on the bottom with nothing attached to it. BTW, he has several of them amoungst his trove so far! He found a 30' x 12' canvas awning on the bottom a few years ago, one of his buddies now has a very nice whole boat cover!
Only loss so far has been one of the mast gates I made. Was about to put in the first screw when it hit the deck and in two bounces it was gone. Actually this made me go back and remake it, and the next four (yes four, two spares) I made were much better then the first edition.
