We're thinking of replacing the curtains on our '77 Catalina 25.

Anyone have advice on materials, patterns, installation?

Thanks,

Monty

Replaced mine with snap-in-place accordian type shades that I made. they work great and can be folded in place when privacy is not an issue so that they stay clean and spider free. If you are interested I will take some photos and post them along with instructions. Or maybee someone else has done a similar project.

OK Bob I'll post some pictures but it will have to wait a few days until I can get down to the boat.

I just replaced my curtains not to long ago, I used the track that was already in place, sewed on the the little slides, time consuming but worth it. If you mesure the tracks you will notice that the are narrower towards the bow and wider towards the stern, this makes the sewing a little more work, but it can be done. My Mother sewed mine for me..Just pay attention the the messurements, and the placement of the slides....this is before and after...

I put in 4 curtains on each side so that I can pull them apart and make it look nice or pull them together for privacy, I dont have a pic with all the curtains in, but this is two of the 4 on the stbd side. this is another view,

I hope this helps, I have to go out and take some pics tommorrow, so I will take more of the curtains to give you more if you need them. I am working on putting a shelf in on the bulkehead facing the cockpit, what a chore, all those angles, its very chanllangeing. will post pics later.

Monty and Bob,
Sorry it took so long for me to post these pics. but I couldn't get down to the boat until Friday night. Anyway here are the folding shades that I made for my boat.

The pleated shade material was cut from an inexpensive pair of shades that I purchaced on sale. The wooden slats are made from a piece of wood paneling but could be made from any thin (1/8") piece of wood I used the paneling because I had some scrap and because it bends a little and wont need oiling or varnish. The shades are held in place by snaps that replace a few of the screws on the port light frames (see close up)so that I can remove them easily in the winter.
Snaps on the frame are also used to hold them in the down position. To keep the shades in the up position I used a small piece of velcro. The shades in the picture were made about five years ago and are holding up realy well. No spiders and easier to keep clean than curtains.

Renzo,

That's a very clever curtain option! Thanks for posting it. The finish on your interior woodwork looks good too. Is it varnish? Is that a cockpit grate I see in your bottom photo? If so, what is it, and how do you like it?

Barry - Did you do anything to the tracks so the little plastic curtain cars would slide better? Our curtains are fine, it's just a chore to slide them around.
Thanks!

Leon,
The finish on the interrior teak is just Tung Oil. I wipe it on with a rag - let it sit a few minutes and buff the residue off with a clean rag, once every season. Yes that is a snap-together cockpit grate in the photo. I bought it at West Marine five years ago. I don't remember the brand name, but I'm sure West still carries it. I like the grate for crusing, but when I'm racing my crew takes it off the boat and leaves it at the dock because it tends to buckle under foot when the boat is heeled hard over and everyone is bracing against it to haul on lines. I suppose I could make some kind of fastening system to attach the grate to the cockpit sole but it's a low priority on my to-do list. I find that if you apply libral ammounts of rum and beer to your crew they don't squeek as much.

Sorry for not getting back soon,
the was did I do anything to my tracks, no, I didnt, the are a little still, but that mainly has to do with the way the tracks run along the ports, narrowing to to the bow and wider to the stern, so they dont really move that great. However, I ran out of the plastic slids and had to buy more from CD, they didnt have the exact ones that I had on my boat, so, I figured what the heck, would try any way. They actually work better, and the curitains that have those new slides do work better. So I would suggest buying new slides, thats a lot of sewing...but sure cheaper than buying them from CD and you can pick your pattern...well hope that helps...again sorry for not getting back sooner...been up to my elbows in boat projects...
Cheers

Martha Stewart has been begging me to take her sailing. I told her only if you sew me some curtains. I'll keep you posted.

my wife made our curtains,
we bought some material at the local rag shop, and pickup up the rods at home depot,
looks ok, gives us alot of privacy and the holes were already there to mount the rods, one on top and one on the bottom ,
gives it that home look

The ones on our C25 are just like quilombo's. We went to a local fabric store, and found a nice sailing motif, then we patterned each port and curtain. Once I had one curtain for each port, I then split the length measurement in half in order to make 2 curtains for each port. Then we took the fabric to a local tailor since the Admiral or myself don't sew. Then we bought the rods at Bed Bath and Beyond. They are snap in brass rods and have a smal bracket on each end. You can see them on the end of quilombo's curtains in the picture. Then I had to eyeball them onto each port. The mount the brackets and slide on the curtains.

NOTE: If you are the one drilling the holes for the brackets be VERY CAREFUL. You do not want to drill through the cabin side. (Don't ask me how I know this.) I recommend using a nylon washer between the screw head and the bracket to keep the screw from going in too deep. You can find them at Home Depot or Lowes and they are somewhat thick and are white so they blend in.

Mike, I was lucky with the holes, they were already there,,, so I just used a real small ss screw to hold the brackets in place, as I hate dtilling, or tapping into my boat,,
but as I mentioned in one of my earlier threads the previous owner of my boat was hole happy,,,

Renzo,
Two questions: what are the little lines that run up through each pleat? Second, how did you make the pleats or did the material come that way?

Does anyone happen to have the window dimensions handy? I'm not near the boat but would like to the planning and purchasing if possible.

Renzo, where did you get the snaps?
I think I will try your shades method but I don't quite understand how the snaps are mounted in the slats.

Snaps are available from WM. The ones on the slats are a two part snap, kind of like a rivet. You drill a hole through the slat and put one half of the snap on one side and the other on the other side then hit it with a hammer and a nail set to peen over the rivet part. Sounds more complicated that it is. When you see the snaps it will all become clear.

ajacobs,

I am working on making my own new curtains so I have the measurements to my 1982. As you know, the ports have a bit of a taper from fore to aft and the larger port to aft has a little wedge shape as well. Those disclaimers out of the way, the aft port is 34" from the the outside edge of the frame to the other outside edge. It is 9" high at the widest point. The forward port is 32" at its widest point and 8" high. There is 6" between the two ports in the saloon. The light in the head is 7" x 16".

The only thing I can add is that I agree with being VERY CAREFUL not to drill or screw through the cabin side. Whoever redid the curtains on the boat we just bought did this. We have 2 holes all the way through on each side. The warning is that it appears they used the same screws all the way down the length of the track, so I assume that the walls are thinner aft than forward.

Another option - not cheap - is the Peek a Boo shades that can be purchased at zarcor.com.

Have fun and post pictures when you figure it out!
