I know the Yanmar 1GM10 is an option when purchasing your boat new from the dealer but has anyone converted (or considered converting) from outboard to inboard on a 250?
I'm needing to replace my 9.8 outboard and I've been told (by the admiral) this is the last boat I will ever own so I'm really looking over all of my options. I'm sure the price is 3-4X the cost of another 4-stroke o/b but just curious...
IMHO an inboard on a C250 will take away one of its best assets - the aft bunk area. Why fill that up with a diesel when an OB is cheaper and effective? Don't do it. Show the Admiral how much money you are saving and then use some of that to buy some cool electronics!
I have the Yanmar Saildrive on my boat and I'm very happy with it, but I only use the aft bunk area for storage...I would check with the factory in regard to a retro-fit of the saildrive unit. I'm sure there is a lot more to it than just the price of the desiel and saildrive unit. You have a fuel tank to install in the aft bulkhead area and moving the battery to the bow if you want to keep with the stock arrangement. Best of luck on whatever you decide...Dan #727
I'm curious about what you are looking to gain with an inboard. The convenience and relative cost of an outboard that will move the boat at hull speed seems to outweigh the gains you'll get? If there are any gains to be had. Why do you want to convert?
A Yanmar saildrive could fit immediately under the hatch, and would not project at all into the aft berth.
It definitlry isn't a cheap mod. You probably have about $9k in materials alone. A new 1GM-SD20 would set you back about $7k with another $2k for the fuel tank, fuel fill, transfer and vent pipes and fittings, wiring harnesses, throttle and tranmission shift, control cables, engine housing, sound insulation, tie downs, and glass for the foundations Unless you could do all of the labor yourself, figure another about $3k in labor (40-60 hours).
