I recieved an EMail yesterday from West Marine of an ongoing sale for the above items. Discounts range up to 50% but most are much less than that. Still...worth checking into it if you are in the market for some fans, etc.
I wanted to install 2 Caframo fans that were selling for $99/each. On-line they were on sale for $79/each and since the order was over $100 for the two of them, there was no shipping charge. I had a $15 coupon from past member purchases and so I entered the coupon number and got another $15 reduction.
Anyway, I suspect you can get to the sales on these units whether you received an EMail or not. Check it out...maybe you will find a good buy for something you were planning on buying anyway.
Another thing to remember is if you have their card, everything starts out at 5% off--that's what you get back in coupons (as Larry did).
Also, yesterday I picked up a Marinco shorepower adaptor at West for a friend--Defender had it for $36 and West had it for something like $52, but happily matched Defender's price. Before I buy anything at West, I check Defender's price. Then, if I feel like a 15-mile trip (instead of 1), I give the business to Defender.
Last month, I went to my local West Marine to buy some line and after showing them the Defender printout for a price match, the sales associate said they only price match if the other business was local. The store manager still honored the Defender price, but he had to enter a local business name into the computer/register.
I have to check out where defender stores are located. i do not think there are any near me but...when travelling to other areas, if near water, i like checking out the local stores.
Dave,
I have sort of a silly question but who knows, I may eventually wind up living in Florida: For those that sail in coastal areas and lake areas of Florida, isn't there a concern with alligators ? What do people do that have 12-13' sailboats and use them on lakes or close to shore ? sail carefully ? Is there an alligator problem in seawater/coastal areas because they have both fresh and seawater alligators or is that the difference between a crocodile and an alligator ?

Defender is a national mail-order outfit. In the past, I've gotten West to match internet and mail order competitors' totals including shipping (printed off the web site). My story is I'd like to support the local store, but not (in some cases) at a 40% premium. (Many of their prices are actually the same.)

I guess it would depend on how the lawyers define "national" and "local" competitor. Who knows, West Marine might not define "national" to include every mom and pop outfit that ships nationwide.

I do think it's fair for West stores to match distant or web-based competitors' prices including their shipping, since that's what you'd have to pay the competitor.
When I lived in Stamford, CT in 1975 I used to drive down to --I think--New Rochelle, New York to shop at a defender store there. That was a LONG time before I heard of West. At the time I thought that was just a store named Defender Industries, and now I wonder if it was the original store before they went national.

Now there's only one, but it's big!
