Just for the record, I bought and purchased the tiller lock from Cansail a few weeks ago. My reactions: easy to install. Only problem and not much of one, was I felt like I needed eye straps to connect the control line to, and it was little difficult getting my hand in there to told the washers and nuts. If it had been warm weather and the wife with the small hands had been there it would have been much simpler. Have only sailed it once, but I can testify that it works at least as well as $2.00 worth of shock cord and looks a lot keener. Instructions say that it needs 5/16 or 3/8 line. I felt that 5/16 was a little too small so used 3/8 low stretch and am going to replace it with a softer line. I would agree with the little blurb from Practical Sailor, which says more or less, "this thing is all stailnless steel and brass and the only problem is that with serious concerted usage, it might not last more than 50 years." It shares with any similar system the problem that, on a boat our size, moving around the boat upsets the balance enough to confuse the poor thing, but that problem is common.

I've owned one for 3 seasons now and still love it. The thicker line is probably better than the 5/16th line. I used the 5/16th line and over time it starts to crush which causes it to slip. I have a tiller pilot now but still use the cansail a lot. Don't expect more than 20 or 30 seconds of time away from the tiller - an auto pilot its not! It will give you time to tack when your single handing. Great design.

Turk...quick question: What is the difference in use between the tiller lock and tiller pilot? And why would you need both? I have the pilot and when I want to lock the tiller in position, I just tighten the adjustment knob. Just curious.
