Jim, in Indiscipline, and I, in C Angel, left our slips at L-dock in Mission Bay headed toward a sheltered part of the bay to try out the spinnaker I had bought/traded Jim for. By the time I got over there the wind had picked up enough that I thought it prudent to save it for another time.

So we headed out of the Bay to look for whales. He mentioned that they were further off shore this year and so I pointed C Angel due west and set the autopilot. I noticed Jim had stopped to reef but I decided to wait. By the time we made it to the end of the jetty I was heeling 20+ so I got a reef in too! The water was choppy and confused right at the harbor entrance but smoothed out as I got further out. Slowly the wind eased and before too long I let out the reef. I had a great sail and within a couple of hours I was eight miles off shore and my cheap Hummingbird depthfinder had long given up past it's 300 ft. depth limit. Several dolphins came by to visit but no sign of whales

Soon it was time to turn back as the coast was turning into a purple haze with just the mountains tops outlined against the blue sky. I was making good time back when the wind started to die even more. I watched the GPS speed (vmg) drop below two knots and the ETA estimate was climbing way past the time for sunset. Now was time to finally try out that spinnaker! I dug out my new ATN tacker and the sail bag and soon had her flying. Boat speed soon climbed past four knots and I was going to get back before sunset.

This catamaran played with me for a while then got bored and took off.

I flew like that for an hour or so and as I got closer to shore the GPS was starting to read close to six knots. One good round-up and I decided it was time to douse it. The biggest wind seemed to be hugging the coast (it was mainly from the north, northwest) and it was blowing pretty good. Got the spinnaker dumped in the cabin and cruised on in with a big smile on my face.

The ATN Tacker worked really well. It was easy to set up and easy to release. It was a great sail and perfect weather (I was down to my t-shirt for a little while). Can't wait to fly that spinnaker on a good downhill run like it was cut for!

Duane, I sold it to Charlie. A spinnaker from a J24 fits a C250 just about perfect. Charlie I hope you picked up the little camera. I started to feel real sick and came in early. I've been home with the flu ever since. Both kids are out of school, too.

I figured as much Jim - Glad it works so well.

Depending on sales price of the wasp...if it ever goes... I'll have another J-24 kite and a full c25 kite for sale too.

Hi, Duane. By then I might be interested in either kite after seeing how Charlie rigged the "pink" kite Using it like an asymmetrical without a spinnaker pole is so much simpler.

Got pics of either or both? Colors?

Gary, get the C25 spin. The J24 is quite a bit smaller, even on my standard rig.

If you two guys start flying them as asyms, I'll be able to go deep and kick butt on those downwind runs.

I gave Charlie a good pep talk for joining Cortez. In strong winds we had the other day the C250 was just as fast as my C25 off the wind. I think my boat is a little stiffer and can point a little higher under the conditions we had (flying 135 with single reefed main). I saw his boat take a big round up prior to his putting in the reef.

Lets get all the 3 of us into CRA and start racing each other.

Charlie, check these links

http://www.cortezracing.com Only $150 first year $75/year after that all CRA races have no fees for members.
