I know this has been asked before, and I believe that Arlyn has responded, but I couldn't find it via a search, so...
How do you prevent water from leaking into the 2 cockpit lockers?
I need detailed instructions of the installation, preferably with pictures, of the weather stripping - or whatever - that can be used to prevent leakage into these lockers.
John, I will try to add a teck tip about the lockers with a picture.
My solution used some weather stripping from home center. It was fairly dense foam about 1/2 to 5/8 inch thick and perhaps 1" to 1.5" wide with one sticky side.
I installed by first cleaning the undersurface of the locker lid with acetone. Use masking tape formed into rolls to position weather stripping on the two sides and back lips of locker with sticky side up. Once in position, peel of the tape from the sticky side and close the locker lid. Open the locker and remove the masking tape rolls and firmly press the weather stripping to bond well.
Mine has stayed in place with no problems and solved the problem of water in the lockers. Don't seal the front so as to allow a little locker ventilation.
I still have a leak problem but only on the starboard side. I've replaced the weather stripping on that side twice but it still leaks during heavy rains. Will try again and let you know. The starboard locker fills up completely.
That makes sense - I bought some 'Marine' stripping at Loew's Home store a while back, but I don't think it is 1 - 1 1/2" wide. Was yours marine or just regular weather stripping? Also - how did you handle the corner areas?
I really don't like filling up the cockpit lockers with water every time I hose down the cockpoit area...
