On a previous thread addressing unseasonably cold and snowy weather here in the UP of Michigan, I also mentioned that I was in second place in our clubs frost bite series, one point ahead of a Tartan 28 and a Hunter 35.
Well, race day was a gorgeous 51 degree day with lots of fall color, about 3" of snow on the ground and BIG wind. It was one of those inland lake sailing days when you should be reefed on one side of the lake and under full sail on the other. I chose full sail for two races, got knocked around and blown over, and finally reefed in the last race only to have the wind die out in the first leg. I was sailing solo throughout the series so I didn't think taking the time to shake out a reef in the middle of a race would gain anything. All in all a bad racing day. Fortunately I had enough first and seconds in the previous races to hang on for third place in the series ahead of the Hunter 35. The Tartan beat me by four points.
I had hoped to improve from my third place finish last year. If I had reefed early as I did in previous races this fall, I might have been able to do it. Conditions were a toss up that day and I guessed wrong....twice. When your lying on your side with water flowing over the combing though you get the distinct feeling you should be reefed. That unfortunately was the worst and last bad gust of the day.
The sail home was absolutely gorgeous though, made up for my disappointing race performance, and had me thinking ahead to next season. I am now all tarped up for the real UP winter which is right around the corner.
Sounds like you had fun Al. I got out on St. Clair today for six hours. Went down the Detroit river and turned about at the RenCen. 15kts, 43 degrees and rainy. What a great day. As I type this I can still feel the motion of the ocean. Cheers.
