Has anyone replaced their blue box that comes with our boats. Sorry if I am calling the cooler a blue box, the fact is that it would be blasphemy to call that thing a cooler since it looses ice faster than the Sahara!
Anyways, I have a separate 12v cooler and would like to see if anyone has replaced our blue box with something else (Maxcold by Igloo for example). If so what model and brand have you used?
I built in a 'cooler' in the stbd cabin underseat storage. It must be about 90+qts. Is made of 2" styrofoam insulation and is about to be made permanent. Sure holds a heck of a lot more than the blue box and you would never know it was there. Only draw back is the act of moving the seat cushion and lifting the lid. We put over 50 bottles of water in the new cooler plus all of the cooler food for a 6 day trip. Got rid of the blue box and replaced it with a 5 day cooler. That held ice and the prefrozen stuff.
No drain in the seat cooler, so I just bail it out.. plan on getting a hand powered or battery powered bilge pump to empty it.
Raul, I replaced mine with the IGLOO 50 quart. It says it will keep ice for five days. I haven't tried it for more than three, but I still had ice available after three days this past summer.
Did not have to modify anything, it just slips in were the old blue one went. It is a tight fit with the handles down. Don't know if it is the max cool, but is is suppose to keep ice for five days.
Did you get EM on the Oct. cruise? Have not heard from you.
paul. i freeze 1 gal tupperware type containers. dont fill them clear full. that way yoou dont have to baiol.. just take out the tupperware when its thawed and dump it overboard.
I think we have all experienced the increased cooling effect of ice cubes in the cooler versus big lumps of ice. As the ice thaws, the cold water increases the cooling surface area and so things tend to stay cool and get cooler quicker. but the ice melts! The tupperware/frozen bottled water will cool the box but not as efficiently as ice cubes.
So we need something in between. I vote for the Ice Snake! 2' long popciles. Full of flavored juice, when they defrost, then they double as edibles. They would have a large enough surface area to do lots of cooling.
But we still need a certain amount of water in the cooler to get the best results. So I'm tempted to try dumping a couple of gallon of nearly freezing water in the new cooler and then putting the tupperware/frozen bottles in that. Should do the trick.
I think a simple pump is the way to go. Anyone got any favorites?
Agree that the supplied ice chest is ng except for brief day sailing. It now sits in my garage. In its place is a small igloo for day sailing, next to it my tool chest. For multi-day tripping I have a super chiller igloo under the table, per the pics:
