What a day...I arrived at the pier shortly after a gal and her husband motoring their Rhodes 22 slammed into my 2003 Honda 8hp long shaft at what must have been close to their hull speed. The bracket on the motor is cracked almost in half and the entire lower unit is bent. They are nice folks, inexperienced retirees who zigged when they should have zagged but ouch, there goes my weekend of sailing. My thoughts are that the engine is totaled although I won't know until I get a professional out to look at it. I am thinking that I might take the money I recieve and invest in a new 25" Tohatsu 9.8 as they are considerably lighter, smaller, and less costly. Anyone have any experience with this motor? While the Honda always started and ran well, it had a pretty obnoxious tiller rattle that I could never get rid of. Also, has anyone ever seen even a list price list of Honda outboards? I have been all over the internet tonight without much luck. Sad Willy
Willy; I replaced our 1999 honda 9.9 last year with a Nissan/Tohatsu 9.8. The honda ran great but was a manual start and my first mate just couldn't start the engine. We're very happy with the Nissan, quiet, powerful and ecconomical on gas. After two complete seasons of use we're very happy with our choice. The Nissan is electric start, but my wife can start it manually with no trouble. We felt that it was very important that she be able to start our engine should something happen to me, now it's just a feature that we wouldn't want to do without. Bill c250wb #134 Serendipity
Agree with Bill completely. Our electric start Tohatsu 9.8 is 9 months old. We bought it from www.onlineoutboards.com for $1,900.00, no sales tax and no shipping charge. Very good tech support, too.
Willy, I would not hesitate to recommend this motor. Mine is a 2001 with no attention other than an impeller change a couple years back. I once motored with it for 5 hours straight, and not a hickup. Creates a sense of comfort and is very economical.
Willy, We have a new 9.8 Tohatsu. It is very quiet, terrific on gas and is a breeze to start if your battery is low. It also has the shift lever on the front instead of the side.
What a weekend! I picked up my motor but could not get it on until Sunday. Friday and Saturday I had to return to the boat every 3 hours to re-adjust docklines as my pier doesn't float and we had a Noreaster. Coinciding with the full moon, it made for incredibly high tides. On Sunday, I managed to get the engine on and she started on the first pull. I worked around the dock for the first two hours of break-in but did not get my charging/ignition cable attached. One thing, the wires running from my battery to the through-bulkhead plug are 8 gauge and the wires running from the motor look to be believe it or not 6 gauge. Does anyone see a problem with splicing these? It would save me a lot of time running a new set of lines and changing the plug.
