My Danforth Saturn Compass bulkhead mount on 1985 Catalina lost the fluid due to what appeared to be cracking of the plastic. I bought what I thought was a replacement, a Danforth Saturn model A149 global. It does not work due to the pitch of the bulkhead. This model needs a near vertical bulkhead or the degrees cannot be read. The company changed the compass from a polyaxil model due to expense. Of course, what else is new on a boat? They are always changing things and we have to figure it out. They said to make a shim but I prefer not to go that route if possible due aesthetic reasons. Does anyone know of a good replacement? I now have a 4inch hole in my bulkhead.
Thanks

The Suunuto 4 1/2 is designed to work with the pitch on the Catalina 25. I installed mine last fall and am very happy with it. You can buy one through West Marine or Catalina Direct.

Is it possible to repolish the plastic on my compass? Anybody ever done this?

Dream Catcher - You could make a rather nice looking shim with a piece of teak. Angle cut it router it etc. It wouldn't have to be an aesthetic nightmare.

Ajada - doubtful. Clouded plastic is usually an issue with the polymer itself and not dirty or tarnished.

I had the same problem with a Ritchie Commander. I fussed with the wedge for years. I finally bought the Suunto from Catalina Direct. I still had to put a block on the bulkhead but only because the mounting holes wouldn't line up. I made a nice ring out of a piece of scrap oak 1x. The best part about the Suunto is that although you can compensate it, it was within 2 degrees of accuracy right out of the box. Since I would have a hard time keeping the compass within two degrees of heading in most conditions, I didn't bother compensating it. It's a great compass and well worth the money.
