I was perusing some of the Catalina drawings the other day (either here or on Y!, I forget which) and noticed that in the boom drawings there's a slug for the outhaul.
My rig does NOT have one of those, just a line from the outhaul purchase system over the outside (aft) sheave to a d-ring attached to the clew.
Is this one of the popular post-factory mods, or should I be looking into replacing this? Seems to me the foot shape might be better WITH the slug, but I've been wrong before. My CP26 had a boltrope foot and the outhaul slug. This is a loose (shelf) footed main, new setup to me.
Thanks in advance, as usual! Jim #183 - Team Short Bus

I have seen them both ways, My rig has no slug on the main sail. I have a slide that is attached to the outhaul line, the main is attached to the slide. I also have a strap w/ velcro that goes around the boom and thru the clew.
I've got the slug and and upgraded harken set up in the boom for the outhaul. My experience level is low, so take the next comment with that in mind. I think with a newer sail, my set up is overkill in droves. The older, heavier sails these boats came with probably needed all this hardware on the outhaul.
I also have the upgraded purchase internal to the boom. I'd agree that it seems overkill for my main, we'll see what happens as it ages. Overall, guess I'd rather have too much purchase than not enough.
Funny part was, I didnt realize that was in there. Went to replace the outhaul line for wear (and since it looked like there was a knot-splice about a foot fwd of the aft-end of the boom). Figured the length of the boom, the drop to the deck and back to the cockpit, plus return to the sail and extra for the cockpit. Pulled the aft endcap and HA! Out comes the harken system. Looks like my line was wee bit short!
Also, looks like I'll need to be replacing the slug. Any idea where to get one of these? Something Catalina Direct might have, or ???
Edit: I just realized something - I have what I thought was a sail tie on board. White "webbing" with velcro on either side. I'm bettin' this was used as an outhaul "car" strap, will try rigging that for tonight.
I missed your question on he sail slug. My new main came with a new one, so they can be gotten. Email Harry at EP sails, they obviously know where to get them. How did the strap work out?

Right up until the time my low-time pit crew tried to toss it in the cabin and missed... Actually, I suspect he hit the cabin, but when I tried to get it retrieved they couldnt find it below. It may have got caught up in the spin and lost overboard during the launch later in the race. Now I have a length of 1/4" line that I tie around the boom.
I'll shoot Harry an email about the slug, I'd probably prefer that overall (doesn't leave the boom and get chucked overboard).
